Walking on the mudflats

Discover the breathtaking natural spectacle of mudflat hiking

Are you ready for a unique adventure that brings you closer to nature? Then come along on one of our unforgettable mudflat walks! Wadlopen is an extraordinary experience where you get the chance to explore the beautiful Wadden Sea, one of the most spectacular and dynamic natural areas in the Netherlands and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Twice a day during low tide, the bottom of the Wadden Sea comes dry for a few hours, allowing you to walk there safely and reasonably dry. When it is low tide varies from day to day. Therefore, tidal excursions always take place at different times.

A mudflat walk is a great but also physically challenging way to get away from the daily routine and enjoy the peace and beauty of nature.

Do you like to walk in small groups? Then you’ve come to the right place. During our mudflat trips, we take you in a group of 6 up to 12 people on a voyage of discovery through the special world of mudflats, gullies and sandbanks. You surrender to the elements. Occasionally the water reaches your waist and sometimes you sink to your knees in the mud but mostly you walk through the water up to your ankles. Arie, our experienced and certified mudflat walking guide will tell you all about this unique ecosystem along the way and André will provide translation into English or German where necessary. this amakes the trip accessible to those who don’t speak any Dutch.

After the trip, you can rinse yourself off at a water point and put on dry clothes. Of course, you can return by boat the same day. No need for a ticket, your return trip is paid for. But the crossing can also be perfectly combined with an overnight stay on the island, after which you only take the boat back to the mainland the next day.

We offer different routes, depending on the date the crossing goes to Ameland or to Schiermonnikoog. Whichever trip you walk, we promise you a challenging adventure full of fun, wonder and new discoveries.

So put on your sneakers, brace yourself and get ready for an unforgettable mudflat walking experience! Contact me today to reserve your spot and immerse yourself in the enchanting world of mudflat walking. We look forward to exploring the Wadden Sea with you!

Wading is very rewarding and our mudflat trips are suitable for both beginners and experienced mudflat walkers. But as it can be a physically quite challenging activity, it requires a good level of fitness. If you are dealing with obesity or joint problems, the guide unfortunately cannot take you. Walking through the sucking mud and wading through water channels can be very tiring. It is therefore important that you are really in good shape and able to walk for several hours at a time in tough conditions. There is no opportunity to sit down and take a good rest along the way, the rising water does not wait.

To make the trek a successful experience, you will of course always follow the guide’s instructions. Not only good fitness is important but also bringing the right clothes and day luggage.

Wear clothes that are allowed to get dirty. Because you have to wade through gullies, you can get cold faster.
A wind and waterproof jacket is mandatory, as well as layered clothing, such as a shirt, t-shirt, sweatshirt. Furthermore, shorts and a cap against the sun.
Wear high shoes that do not fall out or sag, even if you have to pull your feet out of the mud. Think high basketball shoes that close above your ankles (All Stars or other brands) or scuba diving shoes. Surf shoes are not suitable. Choose shoes that you won’t be economical with and make sure they can take a beating, that you won’t lose a sole in no time, for example. Walking without shoe soles is not possible with all the sharp shell edges, the guide will not take you.

And further:

Backpack with easy-to-eat and drinkable provisions for the road.
Dry clothes and shoes, waterproof packed.
Be careful with cameras and mobiles, make sure they are waterproofed.
Rubbish bag for your dirty clothes.
If staying overnight: an extra set of clothes, toiletries (small, light hotel pack) and possibly swimwear for a beach day.
